Internships
Great Basin Equine Medical and Surgical Center every year accepts 1 - 2 interns for a one-year internship. Applications are due Nov. 15th of the year preceding the internship. The internship involves the intern with medicine, surgery, sports medicine and outpatient cases. They are involved in all aspects of patient management. As opposed to some internship programs we do not bring our interns in to be anesthetists or technicians, but rather as veterinarians. As such, their veterinary skills and knowledge, capacity for client interaction and work ethic will be called upon. The internship strives to help first year veterinarians hone their diagnostic, therapeutic, client communication and decision-making skills, which are essential for a well-rounded veterinarian. During the year interns will be expected to participate in hospital rounds, weekly journal club and may be asked to write short articles for the local equine publication.
Requirements of application and internship are:
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Letter of intent and Curriculum Vitae
- Three letters of recommendation
- Nevada license
Externships
We also offer externship programs for veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
Veterinary externships are available for veterinary students with a primary professional interest in equine veterinary medicine. Visits may be scheduled throughout the year for a minimum of one week and up to a one-month visit. Externships are limited to third and fourth year veterinary students only.
Externs work intimately with our doctors with patient care and assisting the technical staff. Externs are also welcome in clinical rounds and in journal club. During the externship students are expected to assist practitioners as needed and are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Limited housing accommodations are provided at the clinic and include a private room with television, bathroom and cooking facilities. Liability insurance will be provided by the clinic. Externs are responsible for their own medical insurance.
To request an externship application or for additional information, please contact us at gbe1@live.com or call us at (775) 265 - 7800. The student must submit a letter of intent, CV and the specific dates you would like to visit to the above email or mailing address. After the applications are received, externships are approved and notifications and date confirmations sent to students.
The Veterinary Technician externship program is for students enrolled in accredited Veterinary Technician curriculums. The program provides off campus experience under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician.
